LORD-LIEUTENANT AWARDS

The 2024 South East Lord-Lieutenants awards season has come to a close and we reflect on another spectacular year!

Lt Col (Retd) Rod Gray MBE, Head of Cadets and Youth at SERFCA, said “This was my first Lord-Lieutenant’s Awards covering the counties of Kent, Surrey and Sussex. It was a great honour and privilege to celebrate and read citations to recognise the amazing work of our inspirational Reservists, Volunteers and Cadets. Our Reservists, Volunteers and Cadets are a credit to themselves, their families, their units and society in general. The most humbling of experiences”.

REMEMBRANCE

Cadets from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Army Cadet Force

Well done to all of the Cadets and Reserves from across the South East who took part in numerous Remembrance events this month, as well as those who sold poppies in aid of Royal British Legion.

Also pictured are reservists from HMS King Alfred, who took part in Remembrance Parades in Portsmouth and the Britannia Royal Naval College. Reserves from 165 Port and Maritime Regiment, The Royal Logistic Corps at Southampton football and Cpl Veresa laying a wreath ay Aylesbury Army Reserve Centre.

The Waterloo Band & Bugles of The Rifles also performed at a number of Remembrance events. The band will next be performing a Christmas Concert and Carol service on Saturday 7th of December at the Cotswold School, Bourton-on-the-Water.

As part of the Remembrance events taking place over the country, the SERFCA Employer Engagement Team attended a short service of Remembrance and Reflection at the Statue of Trooper Frederick Potts VC of the Berkshire Yeomanry in Reading.

Frederick Owen Potts is the only Victoria Cross holder from Reading and was virtually unknown in the town, mostly due to his own modesty.

Fred died in 1943 and many people in Reading believed the time was long overdue to recognise his bravery with a suitable memorial in a town centre location. The names of 426 men from the Berkshire Yeomanry who lost their lives in the wars of the 20th Century have also been placed on the Roll of Honour that is part of the memorial.

COMMUNICATION SUCCESS AT SUSSEX ARMY CADET FORCE

Teenagers can often struggle to effectively communicate, but the Cadets from No 12 (Hove) Detachment in Delta Company have no such worries after they were recently given an unusual lesson in military signalling, led by the dynamic Cadet Sergeant Lucas.

The Cadets were taught about the importance of clear and effective communication in both the military and civilian world, to ensure they can always be understood when they talk to others. This is just one of the many vital life skills they’ll need when they enter the world of work and helps build their confidence and communication skills.

A huge well done to the NCOs at No 12 for coming up with an innovative and eye catching way of communication!

Congratulations to the incoming Lord-Lieutenant Cadets who were appointed at His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Kent Awards this month!
