Sea Cadets Annual Windsurfing Competition

The Southern Area Sea Cadet Windsurfing Regatta was held recently in the picturesque setting of Poole Harbour. This annual event takes place to select the best windsurfers to go forward to the SCC National Windsurfing Competition in late September.

This year, although the field was compact in terms of entry, some exhilarating sailing took place. As any windsurfer will know it isn’t the driest of sports, fortunately it was a warm day and the water wasn’t that cold.

After three close races before lunch, the winners of each of the three classes were identified to go through to the National Competition.

After lunch, the competitors benefitted from some coaching and tips from the Windsurfing Instructors one of whom, Petty Officer Thomas Musselwhite, was a Cadet National Champion a few years ago.

The event was hosted by Poole Sea Cadets using their latest kit courtesy of the Commanding Officer of Poole Unit Sub Lieutenant (SCC) Reece Oliver RNR who also ran the Safety Cover. The Race Officer, Andy Musselwhite from Salisbury Unit, oversaw the racing from the committee boat ensuring fair play.

The overall winners of the event were presented with medals and trophies by the Southern Area Officer, Commander (SCC) Gary Bassett RNR. Gary, who is an experienced dinghy and yacht sailor with some windsurfing experience, was impressed with the standard of sailing and congratulated all that had taken part.

One of the windsurfers who deserves a special mention is Cadet First Class Parthiban from Milton Keynes Unit who was taking part for the second year running. He showed grit and determination to complete all the races despite taking a few dips.

Overall winners were Wessex District – Poole & Salisbury Units with runners up Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire District – Milton Keynes Unit.

Sea Cadets is different from school. There’s a lot of learning. But it’s done through activities – on the water and off the water – and our volunteers leading by example.

It’s also different from home, a break from screens and being cooped up inside. The platform we offer is built on the customs and traditions of the Royal Navy. It inspires our work and commitment to supporting young people today.
