Minister Carns also took the opportunity to reflect on his own time in the Armed Forces, sharing several personal stories from his service. His experiences, filled with lessons of resilience, camaraderie, and perseverance, resonated deeply with the young cadets. Many found his stories to be both motivating and inspiring, giving them insight into the life and values that come with serving in the military.
Cadet RSM Bruton, 17, said: “It was amazing to hear Minister Carns talk about his experiences in the Army. His stories were really inspiring and made me think about my own future. Being part of the ACF has already helped me build so many skills, but hearing from someone with his background really gave me a new perspective on what’s possible.”
Alongside the cadets, the Minister also spent valuable time with the Cadet Force Adult Volunteers (CFAVs), who play an essential role in guiding and mentoring the young people in the program. The CFAVs shared their perspectives on the importance of leadership development and how the ACF prepares cadets for their future—whether in military service or civilian careers.
Minister Carns praised the work of the volunteers, noting: “The dedication of the Adult Volunteers is truly commendable. They are instrumental in shaping the character of these young people, instilling values that will serve them well in any path they choose.”
Peter Swallow MP expressed his admiration for the cadets and volunteers, emphasising the importance of programs like the ACF in developing the next generation of leaders.
Colonel Anthony Shallow, the County Commandant said “We are delighted to be able to host Minister Carns this evening and show him what the cadet experience looks like within the Army Cadets.”
The visit not only reinforced the vital role the ACF plays in the local community but also highlighted the importance of supporting veterans and volunteers, who contribute so much to the lives of young people.
