VE80 Commemorations Across the South East

Marking 80 years since Victory in Europe Day

Across the South East, communities came together to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE Day — a powerful tribute to those who served and sacrificed during the Second World War. Here are some of the highlights from this historic occasion across the South East:

The Royal County of Berkshire

Cadets from 17 Platoon Whitley, Berkshire ACF had the privilege of being invited to represent the Army Cadet Force alongside veterans, service personnel, other cadet, youth and community organisations at the Number 10 street party as part of the VE80 commemorations. It was an opportunity to come together to honour the Second World War generation from across the UK and Commonwealth.

It was a great experience for Cdt Ledger, Cpl Haydon and Cpl Gurung. The cadets had the opportunity to speak to a range of high-profile attendees, sharing their experiences from their time in the ACF as well as what VE80 means to them, and they were even served tea and cake by the Prime Minister himself!

Buckinghamshire

Cadets from Training Ship Whaddon began their day at a flag-raising and remembrance service at Milton Keynes Civic Offices. In the evening, they took part in a Beacon Lighting Ceremony at the Milton Keynes Museum, joining the nation in remembrance.

At RAF Halton, the Buckinghamshire VE Day 80 Military Cadet Parade was supported by RAF Media Reserves AS1 Kirwan and AS1 Keen. The team interviewed two extraordinary World War II veterans: Michael Woods, 100-year-old RAF veteran from Dunstable and Dick Moon, 102-year-old Royal Navy engineer from Burnham

Their stories were shared across cadet and local media via print, radio, and television. Sea, Army, and Air Cadets joined adult instructors on parade, observed by proud families, civic officials, and military dignitaries.

Hampshire

HMS Sultan’s Royal Naval Volunteer Cadet Corps honoured Gosport’s fallen at Ann’s Hill Cemetery, placing a memorial cross at each of the 100 war graves. This moving act of remembrance underscored the bravery and sacrifice of those who gave their lives in service.

Later that day, cadets from across the South Region assembled at Winchester Cathedral for a special VE Day 80 service hosted by the Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire. Serving as ushers, readers, and the Guard of Honour, cadets played a vital role in the ceremony, marking 80 years of peace since the end of WWII in Europe.

Kent

Cadets and CFAVs from D Company, Kent Army Cadet Force joined the congregation at St Mary’s Church in Hadlow for a VE80 commemoration service.

Led by the local Padre, the service was followed by a community gathering — complete with homemade cakes — fostering a strong sense of camaraderie and remembrance.

Oxfordshire

Members of the Oxfordshire Army Cadet Force proudly took part in the prestigious VE Day 80 military procession in Central London. Representing the Army Cadet Force on a national platform, five cadets and three Cadet Force Adult Volunteers (CFAVs) marched alongside over 1,300 military personnel in a moving display of remembrance and unity.

Well done to RSMI Hordle, Maj McLennan, SMI Stanton, Cdt RSM Lee, Cdt CSM Banyard, , Cdt CSM Rogers (Procession) Cdt CSJT Venners and Cdt Cpl Johnson.

Surrey

Our Chief Executive Colonel (Retd) Patrick Crowley MBE DL, attended the Guildford High Street Flag Raising Ceremony. The event at the historic Guildhall featured a formal gathering including the bugler, Rector of Holy Trinity Church Simon Butler, Guildford’s new Mayor Cllr Howard Smith, the Town Crier, and High Sheriff Peter Cluff, all coming together in tribute.

Sussex

Cadets from A Company, Sussex Army Cadet Force attended a VE Day service held at Michelham Priory. The event brought together veterans, serving personnel, cadet forces, local dignitaries, and members of the public to honour the legacy of those who served during World War II. It was a fitting tribute to mark 80 years since the end of the conflict in Europe.

A Lasting Tribute
These commemorations reflect the enduring legacy of VE Day and the crucial role we can play in honouring our shared history. Their participation across the South East served not only as remembrance but as a reminder of the values of service, unity, and peace.
