Cadets and volunteers from TS Temeraire (Medway Victory Sea Cadets) have returned from a remarkable educational visit to HMS Prince of Wales, the Royal Navy’s flagship aircraft carrier, after being invited to participate by the Royal Navy’s Youth Engagement Team.
The group travelled more than 250 miles during the day-long visit, departing Chatham at 10:30am and returning home shortly after 9:00pm. The unit has expressed particular gratitude to local schools which approved authorised absence, enabling cadets to benefit from this exceptional learning opportunity.
The visit was organised through PO (TB) Andy Redgate, Team Leader within the Royal Navy Youth Engagement Team, whose support helped make the experience possible.
During their time onboard, cadets received an extensive guided tour of the vessel. Areas visited included the galley, medical facilities, junior and senior rates’ accommodation blocks, dining facilities, the Officers’ Wardroom, the ship’s bridge and the brig.
Cadets were particularly fascinated by the opportunity to sit in the Captain’s chair on the bridge while learning about navigation, command responsibilities and the complex operation of a modern aircraft carrier. Throughout the tour, Royal Navy personnel provided detailed explanations about life aboard ship, damage control procedures and the vital role of watertight doors in maintaining the vessel’s survivability at sea.
The group were also given a close-up look at the ordnance and equipment associated with the aircraft and helicopters typically embarked aboard the carrier, offering a unique insight into naval aviation operations.
Following the tour, cadets spent more than two hours on the flight deck participating in a wide variety of activities delivered by the ship’s company. These included:
- Royal Navy careers information
- STEM activities
- Royal Marines displays
- Fitness and physical challenges
- Firefighting equipment demonstrations
- Weapon handling experiences
- Airsoft shooting activities
- Climbing wall activities
The event gave cadets the opportunity to interact directly with serving personnel from across the Royal Navy, gaining valuable knowledge about maritime operations and future career opportunities.
Commanding Officer Trevor Eaton said: “This was an absolutely outstanding experience for our cadets. HMS Prince of Wales is one of the most advanced and capable warships in the world, and being able to explore the ship, meet serving personnel and learn about their roles provided an incredible learning opportunity.
We are extremely grateful to PO Andy Redgate, the Royal Navy Youth Engagement Team, and the officers and crew of HMS Prince of Wales for their generosity, professionalism and enthusiasm throughout the day. The welcome we received was exceptional, and the visit has undoubtedly inspired many of our young people.”
