Hampshire and Isle of Wight Army Cadet Force proudly showcased the very best of youth development and community engagement during the national Armed Forces Day celebrations, held in Aldershot from 25–28 June 2026.
Following months of planning and preparation, cadets, Cadet Force Adult Volunteers (CFAVs) and permanent support staff delivered an impressive Army Cadet Force presence throughout the four-day event. Visitors were welcomed to a recruiting stand, challenged themselves on the county’s popular mobile climbing wall and tackled the inflatable obstacle course, with thousands taking part across the weekend.
Setting the Stage
Preparations began on Thursday, 25 June, as permanent staff—including the County Quartermaster, Stores Assistant and Cadet Administrative Assistant—supported by a dedicated team of CFAVs, established the Army Cadet Force site on Queen’s Parade.
The task involved transporting and assembling the mobile climbing wall, recruiting trailer and inflatable obstacle course in exceptionally high temperatures. Despite the challenging conditions, the team ensured every attraction was fully operational ahead of the event.
During the set-up, Commander Headquarters South East, Colonel Hawkins, visited the site to thank the team for their hard work and praised the professionalism and commitment shown by all involved.
Inspiring the Next Generation
Friday’s Schools Day welcomed local pupils to experience the Armed Forces community. Although attendance was affected by extreme temperatures and a red weather warning, the Army Cadets’ activities proved hugely popular, with the mobile climbing wall attracting enthusiastic queues throughout the day.
The event provided many young people with their first opportunity to learn about the exciting challenges, adventure training and leadership opportunities available through the Army Cadet Force.
A Showcase of Excellence
Saturday’s Armed Forces Day celebrations saw more than 25,000 visitors attend the event, making it the busiest day of the weekend.
The Army Cadet Force operated three highly popular attractions while also taking part in the main Armed Forces Day parade. A contingent of 108 cadets and adult volunteers marched with pride through Aldershot, displaying exceptional turnout and discipline despite the soaring temperatures.
The parade was reviewed by distinguished guests, including the Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire, the Chief of the Defence Staff and the Secretary of State for Defence.
Throughout the day, the climbing wall and inflatable obstacle course remained in constant use as visitors celebrated the Armed Forces in glorious sunshine. Meanwhile, the recruiting stand engaged with numerous young people, parents and prospective adult volunteers interested in joining Hampshire and Isle of Wight Army Cadet Force.
A particular highlight was a visit from the Chief of the Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Sir Rich Knighton, who spent time speaking with cadets and adult volunteers. In recognition of their outstanding contribution, he presented Chief of the Defence Staff Challenge Coins to Cadet Lance Corporal Parr of Minden Company and Lance Corporals Cintra and Underdown of Arnhem Company.
Engaging the Local Community
Sunday’s Community Day welcomed families and local residents to enjoy the event in a more relaxed atmosphere.
The mobile climbing wall once again proved one of the event’s most popular attractions, while the recruiting stand continued to generate strong interest from potential cadets and adult volunteers. At the conclusion of the event, cadets and staff worked together to dismantle the displays and return all equipment safely, bringing a successful weekend to a close.
A Weekend of Achievement
The national Armed Forces Day celebrations provided an outstanding platform to demonstrate the values, opportunities and community spirit of the Army Cadet Force.
Most importantly, every cadet, volunteer and member of the support staff represented Hampshire and Isle of Wight Army Cadet Force with distinction, professionalism and pride, leaving a lasting impression on the thousands of people who attended the UK’s national Armed Forces Day celebrations.
