Please tell us a bit about yourself

I am Sub Lieutenant (SCC) Rob Streeter RNR and am at Woking Sea Cadets and Royal Marines Cadets (now the Unit’s 1st Lt). I have been retired for six years, and joined Sea Cadets just after retiring. I’d never been in the cadets when a child or been in the Services, but did come from a Royal Navy family.

What was your initial motivation for joining as a Cadet Force Adult Volunteer (CFAV) and what year did you join?

The initial motivation was to do something of value with my time after I’d retired. I had volunteered with the British Red Cross in the past, with a focus on youth engagement towards the end. I thought about several opportunities for volunteering, but Sea Cadets were local, had good facilities and a welcoming atmosphere, and would allow me to rekindle my love of the sea.

What training and qualifications have you done with the Cadets?

With a first aid background, I quickly became an Advanced First Aid Instructor, able to teach our cadets and adults up to First Aid at Work. I gained powerboat qualifications, including Safety Boat, so I can provide safety cover when our cadets are on the water. I’ve also spent time offshore on the Sea Cadets’ power vessels, supporting cadets on the voyages, teaching general seamanship and navigation skills.

What do you enjoy most/get out of being a CFAV?

Seeing a cadet taken out of their comfort zone and them achieving something they didn’t believe they could do! Also, seeing cadets mature, developing confidence and resilience, and being part of a team.

What are some of the challenges you have faced as a CFAV and how did you overcome them?

As with most volunteer-led organisations, the lack of volunteers really does limit what we can do.

What advice would you give to anyone considering becoming a CFAV?

Do it! Cadets offers flexible volunteering, so no matter the time you can give, there’ll be a role for you.
